Frequently Asked Questions
I am a professional rider and trainer. Is Take The Reins only for amateur riders?
No! Take The Reins is for all riders. (And even for non-riders!) This program is just as relevant for professionals as for amateur riders. There is also nothing in this program that is not effective and powerful for EVERYONE — whether you’re an equestrian or not.
I feel ambivalent about “taking the reins” and actually setting goals for myself. The very idea of this program makes me nervous.
Quite often, I have people say to me, “I don’t like setting goals because I never achieve them.” or, “Setting goals makes me feel too much pressure.” or “Setting goals makes me feel like a failure.” If you have ever felt this way, you are so not alone. It simply means that you have never learned HOW to set goals. Setting goals does not mean you are bound to a particular course of action or that you need to be over taken by a drive toward success. In this program, you define what “taking the reins” means for you and then courageously go for it- no matter the outcome. Goal setting is much more about setting a direction and charting your course than it is about arriving at a particular destination. If you feel fatigued by our culture’s materialistic views of achievement and success, know that part of “taking the reins” is about discovering what “success” really means for you in your life and setting goals that are truly in alignment with your values and with the contributions you want to make in the world. Note: If you feel nervous or get butterflies about doing something that pushes you outside your comfort zone, it means you’re on the right track!
I am an instructor. Why should I encourage my students to Take The Reins?
Take The Reins is designed to make your job easier by helping your riders:
- Take responsibility for setting goals and collaborate with you constructively for intentional improvement.
- Communicate and listen effectively.
- Develop an internal monolog for increased confidence and the ability to utilize instruction. (Most riders have self talk habits that sabotage their riding.)
- Establish healthy habits that improve flexibility, mood and stamina.
- Improve self-confidence and the ability to perform under pressure.
- Have the ability to manage emotions and get past fear, anxiety or perfectionism.
- Improve ability to focus during lessons and competition.
- Stay motivated over time and develop consistent routines.
What if I purchase the course and then get super busy or change my mind?
Well, to start with, virtually everyone who starts a Cadence Coaching program wants to complete the journey. I have never had anyone drop out or not finish a program. You’ll also have access to the course materials for life. That means that even if your schedule changes suddenly, you can still get the full value of the program whenever you’re ready.
I’ve already participated in Take The Reins or other Cadence Coaching programs. Is this for me?
Yes. The great thing about this process and this experience is that it’s new every time. You’re new every time. Though some of the course may be familiar, it’s a fresh format and distilled into really palatable, powerful chunks.
Since this is an independent study program and is inexpensive compared with other comparable programs we do not give refunds for Take The Reins. It is also our goal to hold you to the highest standards possible and that means helping to hold you accountable for what you most desire!
I am having technical trouble registering for Take The Reins.

I am truly undecided. How can I decide if Take The Reins is right for me right now?
You are not alone. You might hear a voice in your head saying, “I really should be able to do all these things on my own.” Or “Yikes! I’m not ready to set big goals for myself.” Or “I don’t know if I have time.”
Here’s the deal. The part of you that likes things to stay safe and familiar, the part that keeps putting off important tasks and telling you you’re not ready or not good enough, is trying to save you from discomfort and keep you safe. That part of you is shakin’ in her boots, knowing that signing up for Take The Reins will mean mixing up the status quo. Signing up for this course is a significant first step toward taking the reins in your life and setting a bar for yourself higher than you’ve maybe set before. Fear and the voice of your Inner Critic will naturally bubble to the surface.
By the end of the Take The Reins, you’ll know exactly how to deal with this and shaking things up in the face of your Inner Critic will be child’s play for you. In this moment, though, listen. Try to hear both the voice of your Inner Critic and the voice of your dreams and aspirations. Which voice do you usually hear the loudest? Make this decision based on the voice of your dreams and aspirations, not your fear.
